Whenever material is selected as specimen material it should be

planted as such, and space should be provided wherein the plants candevelop their individual and normal characteristic habits of growth;but when they are used as accent plants it is not so essential to providespace for normal development. Illustrations of this may be seen inthe use of the burning bush, the sourwood, and the silver bell.

LIST OF ACCENT AND SPECIMEN TREES AND SHRUBS

The types of plants in these two groups are sometimes used in largemasses as specimens or as accent plants. The best effect as specimensis obtained when they are used singly and as accent plants when theyare used either singly or in groups varying from one to three specimens.These plants are valuable because of flowers, foliage, habit of growth,texture of growth, colour of twigs, or fruiting effect.
