LOW-GROWING PLANTS ALONG THE INNER SIDE OF CURVING ROADWAYS AND AT ENTRANCES
Plants which are selected for use in this group must have a normallylow-growing habit. In general, their maximum height should ap-proximate not more than five to six feet.
If the eventual height of these plants is to be greater than this, theyshould be of such types as will lend themselves readily to pruning andstill retain their natural outlines.
On many private estates, at the sharp curves of entrance drives andon either side of the main entrance, safety of traffic demands that anopen view be preserved in order to avoid accidents. It becomes animportant question in the development of such plans to decide uponmaterial which should be selected for this purpose. If the degree ofcare which this material is to receive in the years subsequent to itsoriginal planting is that ordinarily given by an expert gardener, thedesigner may select many taller-growing species of shrubs, which, underthis expert care, can be kept within the desired limits of growth. Forthose who wish to be perfectly safe in their selection, material includedin this list represents the general range of the important genera andspecies which are available.
