E. Embankments and Rocky Slopes. This group consists mostlyof vines and scrambling types of shrubs, together with a very fewinteresting hardy perennials. Banks and rocky slopes do not generallyretain a considerable amount of moisture, and accordingly the materialwhich is used should possess a vigorous constitution and low, spread-ing habit of growth, and the ability to withstand lack of moisture. Theembankments which are composed of excellent heavy types of soil, andwhich are constantly cared for, may be covered with any of the low,spreading types of shrubs and perennials.
