b. Green Foliage. Some trees and shrubs are exceedingly inter-esting in the landscape composition because of the varying and vividcolours of their autumn foliage, ranging from brown or brownish yel-low, through to vivid scarlet and bright red. There is anothergroup of shrubs which are not so valuable because of the autumncolour of their foliage, but because of the fact that their foliage isretained until extremely late in the fall, or possibly into the earlywinter. Such shrubs as the privets, and many others shown in thislist, are very valuable in landscape plantations where the ownercannot, because of climatic or soil conditions, resort to the use ofevergreens, and is still desirous of producing a foliage effect that willserve as a background or a screen until late into October or earlyNovember. Many of these shrubs are somewhat tender and thefact that they do carry their leaves unchanged until late in the autumnoften shows that they are not able to mature their wood during a nor-mal growing season. Since they often do not mature their leaves theyare also liable to go into the winter with tender wood. Many of theshrubs given in this list should therefore not be planted in exposedplaces.
